TLS Security

When it comes to website security you won’t input details onto a non-secured site, you can tell this by the little padlock in the top left of the screen on most browsers, so why do it with your VoIP Extension details?

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a successor to Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), and is a form of encryption for sending your Extension details over to the server. The encryption ensures that people snooping through your network have a much harder time trying to get those details, this is very important on public networks where your ISP could read your data or even a third party in the middle using a man-in-the-middle attack could get your Extension details.

This is an extremely important feature from a security perspective for ensuring your data stays secure, meaning no one can use your Extensions without your permission, which could bring your business into ill repute.

On completion of the login process it is then good practice to implement a security protocol for the actual calls. After all you don’t want someone listening in on your business calls that you’ve worked hard to get. We would advise using Secure Real-time Transport Protocol once login is completed and this will be covered in another post.

These security features will be applied by default on VoIP8’s new range of VoIP handsets, as we have configured them with security in mind. Obviously if you prefer an unsecured configuration we will of course remove the security layers for you.

If you can think of an article on VoIP, VoIP equipment or have an idea for a VoIP feature please let us know in a comment below or contact us via the website. While we can’t promise to post something immediately we do read all your comments and will act on them when time permits.
